30 Day Challenge: Double Down Day

Welcome to Day 13 of the 30 Day Pixel Art Challenge!

Hey everyone!

So, I totally missed yesterday's post. As such, I decided to "double down" and create something a bit more ambitious. I'm excited to share this new pixel art GIF of a shifting landscape I created. I also created a short song to go along with this GIF and posted it to YouTube. It's been a blast experimenting with animation and pushing my creative boundaries.

The Vision

I wanted to build a scene that felt both peaceful and alive. Think rolling hills, a calm ocean, and trees swaying with the beat of the song – a little slice of pixelated paradise. It was a challenge to keep the charm of pixel art while keeping it in sync with the song. I got it almost perfect, but definitely need to get work on  my video editing skills!

How I Made It Happen

  • Sketching the Big Picture: First, I figured out the basic layout – where the trees would go, how the hills would roll, and where the lake would sit. It's like laying the foundation for a house, making sure everything is in the right place.

  • Designing the Little Things: Next, I got to the fun part – designing every little detail. drew the leaves of the trees, textured grass and flowers, and the transition from day to night. I wanted to make sure the textures were interesting and the shapes were unique.

  • Bringing It to Life: Then came the magic of animation! I made the trees sway, added stars that pop in and twinkle after night falls, and of course WtC walking by. It's amazing how a little movement can make a world of difference.

  • Adding the Finishing Touches: To top it off, I picked a bright and cheerful color palette to capture the feeling of a sunny day and stars that lit up the night. A few colorful flowers scattered around added an extra touch of charm.

  • Creating the Song: I made the entire song in FL Studio 21, using native plugins like Sytrus and some drum packs I've picked up over the years.

  • Syncing it All Together: I used Shotcut as it's a free resource I can use on Linux Mint to do some video editing. It's my first time messing with it, but I think it turned out okay.

What I Learned (and Some Tips for You!)

This project was a fun reminder that sometimes the best ideas come from trying something new. For any of you fellow pixel artists out there, here's what I'd recommend:

  • Don't be afraid to experiment with animation! It can take your art to a whole new level.
  • Color is your friend. Use it to create the mood and atmosphere you want.
  • Details matter! Little touches can make your art more engaging.

Onward to the Next Challenge!

Day 13 was a great reminder to embrace the unexpected and push those creative limits. I'm excited to see what the rest of this challenge brings!
